Skopje Alexander the Great Airport could undergo a change of name, to help resolve a long-running political dispute between Greece and the neighbouring Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
Successive Greek governments have been angered not only by the association of Alexander the Great with Macedonia, but also by the very name of the ex-Yugoslav republic.
Speaking in January 2017 during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev declared that his government is prepared to relabel the Skopje airport, and it may even decide to change the name of the country.
The goal is ending Greek opposition to Macedonia joining the European Union and NATO.
