Ilan and Assaf Ramon International Airport near Eilat, Israel, will open in September 2018. Transport minister Israel Katz announced the opening date after visiting the site of the greenfield airport.
Jane’s was told that a smart 30 m-high security fence that is being constructed will be completed at the end of February. Immediately after that, the Israel Airports Authority (IAA) will carry out comprehensive testing of all ILS units. Operational readiness tests of terminal systems (security, baggage-handling and check-in) will be carried out in March and April. The air traffic control tower is equipped and ready to operate.
Once all tests are successfully carried out the IAA will apply for an international operating licence. “It’s essential there will be a second international airport to cope with the additional passenger traffic” said an IAA spokesperson.
