Europe “will simply not be able to manage growth if we keep doing what we do today”, the keynote speaker at the opening session on World ATM Congress warned on 6 March.
Eamonn Brennan, Eurocontrol Director General, added that daily traffic volume is set to rise from 37,000 flights in 2017 to 58,000 by 2035, so significant change is required and stakeholders need to work closely together.
“The future calls for the integration [of] modern technology into our airspace,” he said, citing “automation and digitisation, advanced flow management, airspace architecture, and space-based ADS-B” among future concepts.
European traffic is forecast to increase by 2.8% in during 2018, but January recorded a 4.7% rise, and February 3.5%, much of it concentrated in core areas.
