Under the dome: BEUMER develops new-look bag drop and reclaim system

16 April 2018

BEUMER Group has developed a new type of tote-based self-bag drop (SBD) system and an on-demand baggage reclaim concept.

The BEUMER SBD units retain a user interface, but the big difference is that the bag is placed directly onto a CrisBag tote contained within a secure domed structure. The BEUMER reclaim on demand concept, launched at PTE in March 2018, could revolutionise the arrivals experience for passengers. “Once placed on the tote, all other interfaces with the baggage-handling system (BHS) are removed, since the bag can be 100% tracked throughout,” Business Development Director Per Engelbrechtsen told Jane’s .

Passengers are becoming familiar with SBD, especially at large international airports. However, while the technology has revolutionised the check-in process, the overall experience can be unsatisfactory as some passengers may not have followed all the instructions correctly before they drop their bags onto the BHS conveyor.

The BEUMER SBD is an attempt to deal with this issue. A sensor array checks for overweight items and conveyability through the BHS. Sensors will also prevent unwanted items – including small children – from becoming trapped within the domes.

Engelbrechtsen said that the SBD domes could be retrofitted to an existing BEUMER BHS. While this would entail a reconfiguration of the check-in area, with a batch-building approach the overall footprint of the BHS could be reduced by up to 30%, he added. The space saved could be allocated to extra retail outlets, helping to offset the potential cost of the second element of the BEUMER concept, displayed for the first time at Passenger Terminal Expo in Stockholm on 20-22 March: on-demand baggage reclaim.

“The baggage reclaim experience has not yet changed dramatically for passengers,” said Engelbrechtsen. While passengers can pay extra for premium onboard services, everyone is in the same situation when it comes to waiting for their bags on arrival.
