Finavia is investing EUR55 million (USD65 million) to expand three regional airports in the Lapland region of Finland: Ivalo, Kittilä, and Rovaniemi.
Work began in early May, with a scheduled completion date of December 2019.
The three airports require infrastructure development as the tourism industry flourishes. They handled a combined total of 1.3 million passengers in 2017, marking a 23% year-on-year increase (26% at Kittilä, 19% at Rovaniemi, and 17% at Ivalo).
State-owned operator Finavia said the investment would enable the three airports to serve up to two million passengers annually.
The terminal building at Rovaniemi will grow by 75% to about 10,500 m 2 , with upgraded baggage-handling and retail facilities, as well as a new passenger boarding bridge (bringing the total at the airport to three).
