German air navigation service provider DFS is trialling the RECAT-EU European wake vortex recategorisation separation standard for a year at freight hub Leipzig-Halle Airport.
RECAT-EU enables three additional approaches per hour at Leipzig-Halle, where air cargo volume increased by 8.2% in 2017 (to 1.14 million tonnes) and aircraft movements climbed by 8.3% to 69,815. The procedure raises the number of wake turbulence separation categories from four to six, enabling some aircraft types to cut separation minima from 4 n miles to 3 n miles.
