US-based Impinj Inc has introduced a specific RFID endpoint chip to track airline baggage. The Monza R6-B RAIN chip is embedded within a standard bag tag, to enhance the collection of operationally important data from baggage-handling systems (BHSs). The chip is robust enough to withstand the end-to-end baggage journey, and it continues to function in challenging RF environments, such as metal structures that can cause signal interference.
IATA Resolution 753, effective since June, requires airlines to track baggage at four key points: passenger handover to airline, loading to the aircraft, delivery to the transfer area, and return to the passenger.
