The Trump Administration has all but halted long-standing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) efforts to create Safety Management System (SMS) regulations at US airports.
After more than two years, the FAA has still not promulgated final airport SMS regulations. Industry observers hoped to see a final rule by the end of 2018 but they are not optimistic, although 20 US airports have implemented an SMS without a federal mandate. SMS is just one of several pending regulations that remain unissued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), and sources suggested to Jane’s that the regulatory roadblock is in the office of DOT Secretary Elaine Chao.
