The air navigation service provider (ANSP) for Belgium celebrated the 20th anniversary of being corporatised in November by changing its name from Belgocontrol to Skeyes.
The rebranding coincides with plans to unify Belgian civil and military airspace by the end of 2019, when military controllers will relocate to the Skeyes CANAC facility at Steenokkerzeel.
The Belgian defence ministry and Skeyes intend to converge their respective operational systems into a more efficient single system to support co-operation and contingency. Skeyes controls more than one million flight movements a year in airspace below Flight Level 245 (FL245) and it operates control towers at Brussels, Antwerp, Charleroi, Kortrijk, Liège, and Ostend airports.
