U-space reaches its Zenith in Manchester trial

07 December 2018

Manchester Airport has hosted the first airfield demonstration in the UK of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations alongside crewed aircraft in controlled airspace.

In Operation Zenith – the first UK contribution to the European U-space Demonstrator Network – NATS controllers used the GuardianUTM operating system from Altitude Angel to communicate with UAV operators. In all, more than 25 organisations co-operated in the demonstration.

“As an airport we are fully supportive of co-operative drone operations and we are committed to influencing regulation and embracing new technology that allows piloted and unmanned aviation to take place in harmony,” said Chris Wild, head of airfield operations at Manchester Airport.
