Tarmac has launched a new explosive- and ballistic-proof concrete block for critical infrastructure protection.
Named BBX, the block has the appearance of a standard concrete block but “incorporates some clever materials that allow it to absorb either a projectile or a blast”, noted Tarmac’s head of new product development Paul Beswick. “When this happens, it flexes a little, but then recoils back into position.”
Under normal blast situations concrete blocks shatter, essentially producing shrapnel, but BBX retains 100% integrity. “If you were on the other side of the wall, you would hear an explosion but not be impacted by it,” said Beswick.
