Swedish vehicle technology firm Semcon is exploring ways to clear snow from landing lights using autonomous vehicles.
The project is being undertaken in partnership with Lundberg Hymas, with one of its tractors being converted to autonomous function. It will explore the possibility of steering these vehicles remotely from a traffic management centre developed by Yeti Snow Technology, a company co-owned by Semcon and Øveraasen, as well as the possibility of interrupting the clearing of snow to allow an aircraft to land.
Tests of a Yeti autonomous snowplough for runway clearance are already under way at Oslo Gardermoen Airport in Norway.
