Amid public pressure to act after the disruption at Gatwick Airport from 19-21 December 2018, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling on 7 January 2019 announced new restrictions on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) use near airports.
Most significant is the move to increase the exclusion zone from a 1 km radius to 5 km, matching the existing Aerodrome Traffic Zone, with an additional 5 x 1 km extension from runway ends.
The government is also finalising a Draft Drones Bill giving the police further powers. These include the option to take control of and land UAVs, and issue fixed penalty notices for minor offences.
