Aena Aeropuertos posted a new passenger traffic record for the third consecutive year in 2018, with a 5.8% rise to 263.7 million.
Announcing the figures on 14 January, Aena said overall aircraft movements were also up by 5.8% to 2.3 million, while cargo shipments grew by almost 10% to 1.01 million tonnes.
Growth in domestic passenger numbers outpaced international traffic with a 10% increase to 80.4 million compared with a 4.1% spike in international demand.
Passenger volume at national gateway Madrid Barajas rose by 8.4% to 57.9 million, followed by Barcelona (6.1% to 50.1 million), Palma de Mallorca (4% to 29 million), Malaga (2.1% to 19 million), and Alicante (2% to almost 14 million).
