Toyota Industries Corporation and All Nippon Airways (ANA) are collaborating on the first tests of autonomous tractors at a Japanese airport.
The two-week trial at Saga Airport is scheduled to start at the end of March. The prototype Toyota tractors will run a course of about 100 m as the equivalent distance between the baggage sorting hall and the apron.
The vehicles employ 2D/3D light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensors for automated object detection, and a road pattern matching system combined with GPS will enable the tractor to navigate autonomously in airside areas.
