Statistics from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), released via its Airspace Safety Initiative on 13 February, noted a 17% increase in total reported airspace infringement incidents in 2018.
The 1,358 incidents in 2018 (compared to 1,162 in 2017), included 991 in controlled airspace, defined by the CAA as the Control Zone and Control Area. The number of infringements around aerodromes and airports increased from 97 to 130.
Specific data on infringements involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) was not released, although it is highly likely that incidents increased in 2018, given the ever-growing fleet of small UAVs in private ownership.
