China is claiming a world first for high-precision surface monitoring, after completing trials at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport of an application that combines Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communication System (AeroMACS) wireless broadband and BeiDou satellite navigation technology.
Jane’s understands that entry of the AeroMACS/BeiDou system into full operational service is expected imminently. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) had previously trialled AeroMACS at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.
The system blends accurate position monitoring of aircraft and vehicles on the airfield with real-time wireless data transmission. Data is presented on apron controllers’ displays, to improve ground safety and operational efficiency in low-visibility conditions.
