Metron Aviation is providing software to support the Airservices Australia concept of operations for Long Range Air Traffic Flow Management (LR-ATFM).
Metron will integrate implementing software for LR-ATFM into its Harmony platform, which the Australian air navigation service provider (ANSP) has used for domestic ATFM operations since 2012.
In the LR-ATFM version, Airservices will assign arrival times for long-haul flights well in advance to allow the most fuel-efficient en route phase of flight (including trajectory-based operations), taking into account likely demand/capacity imbalances at the destination airport.
Expected benefits include lower emissions from reduced fuel burn, increased traffic predictability, and a lower controller workload for handling international flights.
