A technology partnership between air navigation service provider Isavia and Frequentis, which was launched in 2017, is developing effective remote tower solutions designed to function in the glacial Icelandic landscape and at low temperatures.

The remote tower camera and casing solutions provide the opportunity for isolated airports to be controlled remotely in the future, according to Isavia project manager Teodor Simiganoschi, who added that the technology could be a game-changer, especially for airports in northern Iceland.

The cold-climate solutions are designed to be used with advanced video processing and artificial intelligence to serve airports of any size.

The Frequentis-Isavia partnership focuses on cost-effective implementation using on-site infrastructure to deliver low-cost solutions suitable for remote airfields. “We are pleased to be exploring extreme weather remote tower solutions with Isavia that remain cost-effective,” said Hannu Juurakko, Frequentis vice-president for ATM Civil.

“The ability for remote tower [technology] to provide cost savings to smaller regional airports highlights it as an essential solution for airfields with low traffic volume and increasing risk of closure, effectively providing them with a lifeline.
