TPI releases carbon management research

15 March 2019

New research that looks at the aviation industry’s carbon management practices has found that most airlines have no long-term target for reducing their emissions.

The research comes from the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) at the London School of Economics’ Grantham Research Institute, which has been backed by more than $13 trillion of investment from groups including the Environment Agency Pension Fund, BNP Paribas, and Legal & General Investment Management.

The airline sector currently accounts for 2% of global CO 2 emissions and 12% of transport-related CO 2 emissions. In addition, aviation has climate impacts beyond CO 2 emissions, such as the formation of contrails and clouds, which TPI says are likely to be significant.
