ICAO teams with ICANN to develop protected digital comms system

01 April 2019

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is working with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to explore developing a new trust framework that aims to revolutionise how digital communications are secured within the aviation sector.

ICAO and ICANN signed a memorandum of understanding in February that outlines how they will create a system that certifies digital identities within civil aviation. This is viewed as critical to the safety and security of air operations, as digital technologies become increasingly important.

ICANN is ideally placed to advise on setting up this system. “ICAO is eager to explore the potential of how our agency can serve as a digital identity trust-broker for global air transport,” said ICAO Secretary General Dr Fang Liu.
