Lidar-based passenger monitoring offers precision and anonymity

26 April 2019

US-based motion analytics company iinside has brought to market a lidar-based system to support airport passenger monitoring.

Speaking to Jane’s , iinside CEO Sam Kamel explained that monitoring systems in the past 15 years – such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and camera technology – tracked the location of 50% of passengers within a 4 m margin of accuracy. Lidar, on the other hand, “provides a view of 100% of passengers to a sub-centimetre level of precision in 3D whilst ensuring anonymity”.

The detection system itself consists of a 7 x 10 cm disc that rotates 10–20 times per second and emits beams over light across a 150 m range.
