US backs Iraqi security initiative

09 May 2019

The US Embassy in Baghdad and Iraq Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) officials have embarked on a USD5 million aviation security training and equipment programme.

Officials from the ICAA and three Iraqi international airports (Baghdad, Basra, and Erbil) met to discuss how to implement the programme and continue strengthening security at Iraqi airports in line with international standards.

In remarks on 2 May at a launch event for the initiative, US Chargé d’Affaires Joey Hood said the programme will not only improve passenger safety, but will also bolster the ability of the Iraqi government to attract foreign investors, expand global trade linkages, and encourage economic growth.
