Analysis from Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS), released on 9 May, shows a higher volume of insurance claims after incidents on the airport surface.
AGCS investigated 523 loss events in 2018 at 14 airports in Germany, concluding that “damage to vehicles on the tarmac is the leading cause of insured losses”. More than 50% of the events were caused by collisions between aircraft and ground support equipment (GSE) such as tow and pushback tractors, baggage trolleys, aerial work platforms, or washing systems.
The introduction of tow trucks that connect to the front landing gear of an aircraft led to “several large claims”, according to AGCS.
