Words from the wise advise Europe

Pressure mounts for faster action on boosting capacity

Several hard-hitting studies published in the first half of 2019 call for changes in the way air navigation services are delivered in Europe. They target slow progress towards the Single European Sky (SES) and issue recommendations for air navigation service providers (ANSPs), airports, and institutions. Many recommendations refer to developments already under way, but the studies also urge faster implementation.

The record number of delays and cancellations during 2018 injected a sense of urgency into European airspace modernisation. The number of flights exceeded 11 million for the first time (up 3.8% on 2017) but airline-reported delays experienced double-digit growth to reach 14.7 minutes per flight (for all causes), and these are predicted to rise disproportionately compared with traffic in 2019 and 2020.
