Inmarsat event explores civil BVLOS uses for SATCOM platform

03 June 2019

Inmarsat and Cobham have teamed up with five industry stakeholders to conduct civil aviation trials of the Cobham Aviator UAV 200 satellite communications (SATCOM) platform.

Aviator UAV 200, which has been used by military unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) since 2017, is a small, lightweight SATCOM system intended for use on small tactical unmanned platforms. It supports Class 4 Inmarsat SwiftBroadband services with up to 200 Kbps data rate and near-real-time control of aircraft over SATCOM on beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) missions.

Building on their joint experience, Inmarsat and Cobham formed a UAV pop-up lab with Alpha Unmanned Systems, A- TechSYN, Flylogix, Robot Aviation, and Silent Falcon to test the viability of Aviator UAV 200 in the civil sector.
