Austrian utilities company Wien Energie is working with Vienna Airport to test the first electric charging station to apply flywheel energy storage technology.
Trials at the new charging station in the short-term arrivals car park are scheduled to finish at the end of this year.
The system was developed by Wien Energie and Israeli startup Chakratec. Although the network connection output is only 40 kW, an electric vehicle can be fully charged in 20 minutes with an output of up to 100 kW at this new charging station. This is made possible by a 10 high-speed kinetic energy storage units in the gyroscope flywheel.
