Two ClearScan explosives detection systems from L3 Security & Detection Systems (L3 SDS) have been installed in two checkpoint lanes at Amsterdam Schiphol in the Netherlands.

The machines operate alongside L-3 ProVision 2 body scanners and an automatic tray return system in the centralised checkpoint at Schiphol.

ClearScan employs dual-energy computed tomography (CT) technology to deliver high-resolution two- or three-dimensional images, and the compact system is capable of scanning more than 500 bags per hour. Its threat library includes solid, liquid, and sheet explosives, as well as homemade improvised explosive devices.

Software features include an advanced laptop removal algorithm which "virtually separates the laptop from the rest of the bag, removing clutter and allowing an operator to quickly clear the bag", L3 SDS stated.

Optional features (as used in Schiphol) include integration with an automatic tray return system. An auto-divert function pushes alarm bags to a recheck area without interrupting the flow of cleared checkpoint bags, while self-paced parallel divesting enables more than one passenger to use the checkpoint at once.

ClearScan was certified by the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) in 2015 at the Type D and D+ performance standard for liquid explosives detection. L3 SDS now targets certification to the newer EDSCB C2 and C3 standard, which would allow passengers to send their cabin baggage through the checkpoint without having to divest electronics or liquids. Jane's understands that C2 testing has been completed, and L3 SDS is now awaiting the results.
