Genetec reports that its AutoVu Automatic Number Plate Recognition System (ANPR) range of products is now in place at 180 airports, with Oakland International in the United States the latest to sign a contract on 27 April 2017.
Genetec director of product management Francis Lachance explained that an AutoVu SharpV ANPR twin-camera (monochrome and colour) device is used to capture licence plate data. This information is streamed to and managed by the Genetec Security Center Unified Platform. The company also offers a smaller AutoVu SharpX high-resolution camera with local processing unit.
"Parking is a major revenue generator for airports, so maximising usage of space is critical. Using our system, all cars can be automatically counted, especially in multistorey car parks, therefore allowing capacity to be quickly identified," Lachance noted to Jane's during the IFSEC exhibition in London on 20-22 June.
AutoVu units can also be mounted on a vehicle and driven around a car park, replacing hand-clickers. At the same time, all number plates can be captured, enabling the airport to see how parking facilities are used at different times of the day throughout the year.
"You can link the plate number to a particular parking slot using the AutoVu's GIS [Geographic Information System] facility. Many passengers forget the location of their vehicle, so locating it for them is an additional service that can be offered," said Lachance.
