Tokyo Haneda International Airport is to trial robotic electric wheelchairs from Panasonic. Passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs) will be able to input their destination into a smartphone, and the wheelchair will navigate the passenger through the terminal. The chairs are fitted with sensors to avoid collision with people or objects, and will have the ability to link with luggage trolleys or other chairs.
The technology was developed from the Panasonic HOPSI autonomous delivery robot, developed for the healthcare sector. The wheelchairs will be able to travel approximately 24 km at a speed of 8.8 km/h.
