Civic and airport officials broke ground on 16 August 2017 for the new International Arrivals Terminal (IAF) at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Although the scope of the facility remains unchanged from when the project was first announced in October 2016, Jane's has learned that the programme's original cost of USD660 million has increased by about 16% (USD106 million), to USD766 million.
A "progressive design/build process" – employed by the Port of Seattle for the first time in this project – is partially responsible for the cost increase. "The process allows the airport to get the project finished faster, as the contractor is designing the building as part of the process rather than getting a settled design before they start," Jane's was informed.
