Budget carrier AirAsia is poised to become the first Malaysian airline to obtain operational certification from DCA Malaysia for Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required Approach (RNP AR APCH) flightpaths.
The Malaysian programme includes GE Aviation-designed, ICAO Doc 9905-compliant RNP AR APCH paths, which allow the AirAsia A320 fleet to fly precisely defined paths without relying on ground-based radio navigation signals.
Kuching and Penang international airports were the first to undergo evaluation. GE has provided training for the flight crew, technical staff, dispatchers, and air traffic controllers. The collaboration will improve operating efficiencies for AirAsia by reducing track miles and fuel burn, while also providing aircraft with precise lateral and vertical arrival and missed approach guidance.
