Kahlbacher exhibited a new precision product for clearing ice from inset runway lighting at inter airport Europe.
Mounted on Mercedes-Benz Unimog chassis, the Runway Light De-Icer (RLD) sprays runway lights with de-icing agent at a maximum speed of 30 km/h.
To avoid wasteful application of de-icing agent, and to reduce the environmental impact of de-icing, a sensor bar on the front of the vehicle automatically positions itself above the surface to be de-iced when the device is activated. The sensor bar includes a collision-avoidance capability; when the RLD is in motion, it detects runway lights, and transmits an acoustic and optical signal to the height-adjustable spraying system at the rear of the vehicle.
Depending on the driving speed, de-icing agents are then applied by a 1.5 m-wide spray jet (if required, an additional spraying cycle can also be initiated using the manual spray button). Nozzle positions are horizontally adjustable, and there is a protective curtain between the spray bar and the main vehicle.
