The Italian subsidiary of Rheinmetall Defence reports installation of its DEB-RA runway hazard monitoring and protection system at a military facility.
Rheinmetall Italia delivered DEB-RA to Pratica di Mare, the largest air base in Italy, in February. A performance assessment programme – comprising calibration tests, performance tests, and an operational evaluation – began in July and was completed in October.
Test campaigns were completed under different visibility and weather conditions.
DEB-RA performed according to Rheinmetall product specifications and met airport foreign object debris (FOD) detection performance requirements identified by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Advisory Circular 150/5220-24. Additionally, DEB-RA data management supports Section 6 of AC 150/5210-24, addressing issues of data collection and data analysis and providing support for a FOD reporting system.
A test campaign was also carried out in 2016 at Rome Urbe Airport, with support from Italian air navigation service provider ENAV.
