Dubai turns security into a fishy business

14 November 2017

Dubai International Airport is to deploy an unusual security process from late 2018: tunnels with aquarium-style walls containing virtual fish and facial biometric cameras.

The walls of the tunnels can be changed to show other themed scenes or advertisements.

3D face-scanning kiosks will be set up around the airport for enrolment, and the tunnels will first appear in Terminal 3 before being rolled out to all terminals by 2020.

The ‘fish’ would attract the attention of passengers, enabling facial recognition cameras to capture an image. If this picture matches the image taken at enrolment, the passenger will receive a green light at the end of the tunnel plus a message wishing a pleasant journey.
