Passport Systems Inc has developed a new cargo-screening system called Smart Scan 3D for automatic identification of nuclear materials.
The US government provided most of the development funding. A full-scale system is in operation in Boston to scan maritime containers, but Passport Systems has identified potential airport uses for the technology.
The original Smart Scan 3D design is too bulky for deployment at airports for cargo screening, but the company is now seeking parties interested in adapting a slimmed down version for scanning unit load dispensers or pallets.
The latter currently have to be broken down and boxes individually scanned, generating major inconvenience and delays to the time-sensitive air cargo industry; Smart Scan 3D could be a means of overcoming this problem.
