Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd is set to test the effectiveness of a foreign object debris (FOD) detection system on Runway 2 (14L/32R) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
The Linear-Cell Radar over Fibre FOD detection system will be installed by Hitachi Kokusai Electric (HiKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Malaysia Airports. The field trial – fully funded by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications – begins in January 2018 and is due to continue until December 2020.
The technology is already installed at Tokyo Narita. KLIA was selected partly because its varied tropical weather would help to test the robustness of the system. HiKE also intends the field trial at Kuala Lumpur to act as a showcase for other countries in the ASEAN region “where aviation demands are high”.
