Validation of the Aireon space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system continued in December 2017, with separate test flights by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Nav Canada.
Announcing the results on 17 January 2018, Aireon said that the two flights (in the New York Oceanic and Edmonton Flight Information Regions) received a combined total of 101,517 ADS-B position report messages.
Aireon uses ADS-B payloads from Harris on Iridium NEXT satellites, the fifth batch of which is due to be launched on 18 March. This will bring the total number of deployed satellites to 50 out of the 66 planned to be operational by mid-2018.
